ABOUT

GENIUS LOCI

Curator: Artem Berkovich

The photo exhibition is devoted to the cities of the Urals founded by the outstanding mining public figure and statesman of the XVIII century, William de Gennin. These cities not only play a key role in the region but express its mythology: Yekaterinburg, Perm, Sysert, Polevskoy… Latin expression “genius loci” has double meaning: it is both the unique atmosphere of the place and its guardian spirit personified in a mythological or historical character. According to the curator, William de Gennin is the genius loci of the Urals. The exhibition traces the historical connections between the XVIII and the XXI centuries, investigates the fates of industrial heritage in contemporary life. The exhibition uses both archival materials and the works of contemporary photographers: Denis Tarasov, Dmitry Fedorov, Fedor Telkov, Sergey Poteriaev (Yekaterinburg), Alexander Gronsky (Moscow) and others.
